Culvert Replacement at Stream 05-0067, Tributary to Secret Creek

In July 2004 the Tribe replaced an undersized culvert along stream 05-0067, tributary to Secret Creek. The original 36" culvert was impassable to salmon at all life stages, due to excessive outfall and insufficient size. We replaced the culvert with a 96" wide and 50' long corrugated metal pipe (CMP). It was set approximately 30" below the existing streambed, decreasing the sediment pulse downstream and permitting unrestricted flow. Gravel was placed in the pipe and 15 pieces of large wood were placed in the stream channel to slow erosion and enhance stream rearing potential. Native vegetation and a livestock exclusion fence will complete the project. Thus far, this project appears successful, as tribal biologists and local residents observed many coho salmon spawning upstream of this culvert in winter 2004.
